Another 25 Random Things …

I so enjoyed doing the first random 25 things about me that I decided to do another – but promise I won’t do another one for a long time … maybe! (more…)

Wi-Fi In the Church

I want to setup a wi-fi hotspot within our Church.

The pastor is full of angst over the local population surfing for free for unwholesome content and then telling the local press that they got it courtesy of the local church. You can just see the headlines now ….

I’ve been taken to task for part copying a post from another site. The phase used was “only done in a less interesting way”. The reality is I re-worded it but copied some of the facts and figures!

OK, fair criticsm say I, so I rejoined by stating that not everyone that reads my blog reads the other one and that I had included links to it anyway. I also quite clearly stated at the start whom the facts were from and then again at the end I stated “that full facts and figures are here”. (more…)

I am constantly amazed at the number of respected magazines, technical authors, bloggers, etc that appear to be “in bed” with some of the better name security software vendors.

Plain Daft!

I like to attend InfoSec occasionally.

In fact so occasional that I won’t say when the last time was. Anyway, this year it falls on a date when I can make it and due to a recent renewing of an acquaintance via twitter has made me want to do it. So I start looking into the cost of train tickets and planning it when it dawns on me that my workplace would probably pay for the jolly.

So I ask the boss expecting a simple yes or no. Instead I get, and this is the daft bit, requested to “explain what benefit this will be to me and the business” in a paragraph!

Well strike me down if I’m being silly, but surely it’s obvious? I work in network support and most of my day is spent digging in the bowels of firewalls, IDS’s, load balancers, routers and switches.I think I can safely say that over 70% of my day is spent on Information Security (emphasis mine).

Then again it might just be me.

You Can’t Win Every Time!

So here’s a weird one. I get a call to say that the users web browsing is ultra slow and could I have a look. Being the distrusting soul that I am, I don’t take the problem description at face value – hey, 25yrs in IT has taught me one thing and that is to keep asking questions because eventually the truth will out. I guess this is the same game the police play.

Accountability.

I confess, I’ve been walking my walk in a bit of a daze recently and certain things have suddenly hit home and made me realise what I’ve been doing. Or more accurately, not doing.

One thing I do need to do is be more accountable. Accountable for my day to day walk with God. Accountable for what I write here. Accountable to my family, for my health, my finances, in fact everything I do, think and say. (more…)

25 Random Things

An ex-school colleague recently tagged me on Facebook with a meme doing the rounds entitled “25 Random Things”. personally I tend to avoid any meme that originates on Facebook but this one intrigued me enough to want to reply, however I have no interest in following the meme through by tagging 25 of my other friends.

They can come and find the answer here instead … (more…)
