7 Ministry Ideas Using Tech

tool iconAs part of the 31DBBB challenge we’ve been challenged to write a list post as list posts are succinct and hit the reader right where they are at.

So, keeping in mind that this is a tech blog, here’s my list post for today’s part of the challenge:

  • Run a computer workshop.
  • Run a “Parents Internet Safety” class.
  • Run a “Youth Internet Safety” class.
  • Find a local church that doesn’t have a tech volunteer and volunteer.
  • Learn some new tech or software purely to help your church.
  • Take one section of your church and find a way to make tech more useful to them.
  • Offer to train non-christians on better, safer, more effective use of their tech.

I hope these prove of some use and certainly some of these I’ve undertaken and others I plan to.

What other tech ministry ideas do you have?

Great post! I think most churches are scared of technology..

That is so spot on Scott – especially my church. I guess it's teh burden I've been given to keep me in my place.

      Tx for the comment.

If anyone's wanting to find a church for #4 on the list, I am the Pastor!!

    Good job.

Kevin … where are you based?

I ask because if you keep your eye on this blog and another I write at: churchtechmatters.com then I can tell you that we have plans in the pipeline that hopefully will start to address this type of need. We of course need to cover as much of the world as we can, but a start is the best place :)

    Good list.

We've done the workshop..more of a clinic for sick PC's. I got the idea from @jimwalton. Went REALLY well.

    Thanks for the extra ideas!

Greg – as ever sir you are more than welcome.

Maybe: run a twitter or facebook workshop (or something more general and call it Social Media)
I am not sure how well versed you typical church goer is in this, but at my church there is a huge divide between the small group in the know and the huge remainder they have no clue and probably don't want to

Now that I like. We have a lot of teens that don't give a fig about what, how and with who they share …

But with companies being 'in to' social media and using it as a part of the hire / fire routine they should be worried. So yes, a social media class is a must. And if we get some older folks then they can learn what all this stuff is about.

Love your layout and your list. Thanks for the compliment over in the group comments!

Erica, you are more than welcome and I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

This is a good list. So many people are intimidated by tech, and a little free training will go a long way.

Another idea: Volunteer to help people with home tech needs in your neighborhood by putting a short ad in your HOA's newsletter.

I had to look up HOA. Not one I'd seen before, but we have similar things in the UK.

That said, your idea is a good one to add to the list though I would hope that the PC Workshop would include more than just the church so that it becomes a witness rather than a self-serving thing.

When time allows I plan to blog on each of these in more detail.

If you decide to "Learn some new tech or software purely to help your church.", you might look into open source alternatives. Not only is it helpful, it's also free! There's many great projects out there available…

Kevin – for some reason this went into the bitbucket and I don't check it that often for non-spam incorrectly pushed there.

And yes – of course OS should be considered (and only considered not seen as the all seeing right way) but I'm not going down the road of debating that for now. Should I find the energy I'll come and hassle you on your site :)

Thanks for making me smile over at Green Inventions. Yeah, that's in Kenya. My hub took the picture. I've never been there.

Oh, and I figure that my little ole blog is the LAST place Darren Rowse would show up. :) Which is part of the fun of asking for a link. I'm in an amused mood for this project. :)

Amused is good. It certainly helps – I sometimes feel my blog is a little too dry. Perhaps I should get you to guest blog?

Good post. To the point and short. Have you tried any of these before? If so which ones work the best?
I have found a lot of parent clueless about social media. So a class on social media for parents would be a good idea I think.

I've done the PC workshop on a small scale but know of several churches in America that have also run then very successfully. Also the Internet safety class for adults rather thn specifically parents I've run.

Both worked well but which would work best for others greatly depends on your church makeup I guess.

Remember the aim of the list was as a missions thing – so ensure the workshop is run by the church for the community.
