I’ve just finished reading an interesting post over at the OurChurch.com blog which contrasts the why of the relative current success of certain high profile ministries over declining ex-high profile ministries.
At least that’s how I read it.
However, I found the comments to be far more interesting than the post itself. I have no real grounds on which to base my opinion on the main article as I’ve only ever (and then only once) attended what might be termed as a mega-church. But as I say the comments are always a fertile ground.
One common theme is:
“it is a sad day for the Church of Jesus Christ when people follow anyone or anything besides Christ. I think many are way too wrapped up in the media–Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc.–when they should be wrapped up in the Word of God.”
The basic inference being that we (generic) shouldn’t ever get involved in anything that doesn’t glorify God.
Whilst I agree with the principle, I don’t agree with the delivery. It may of couyrse just be my reading of the comment but I read it as “do nothing but that which glorifies God to the detriment of everything else”.
Now is that right?
After all are we not called to be “in the world” but not of it? My reading of that part of the Bible simply states that I have to meet folk where they are at – if not how else do I get to portray Christ to others? So if I have to go to the pub and have a few drinks to watch the rugby with non Christ following friends, then I will.
I rather feel these comments have missed the point of the post … but I don’t think I’m alone.

Thanks for mentioning the article. It's amazing how many silly, criticisms people posted in the comments.
"it is a sad day… when people follow anyone or anything besides Christ" I wonder if this commenter follows their pastor? Is their church a part of a denomination or association of churches? Christ is supreme, but most Christians follow some Christian leaders in their pursuit of Christ.
Paul – I appreciate you taking time out to visit.
The old adage of God wanting "Earthly fruits and not Spiritual Nuts" applies everywhere and not just on blogs! I remember seeing that on a tee shirt shortly after I became a christian and it's stuck with me since.
