Find Folks On Twitter

Twitter is only as useful as the people you follow.

Or put another way – you’re only going to get out to the effort you put in. In this case you need to put some effort into finding folks to follow and whilst I’m certain there are many posts about this topic but here’s mine …

First you need to decide on a twitter strategy.

A what I hear you cry? A strategy. Is your use of twitter going to be for business, for promotion, for fun, for networking, and so on. It can of course cover multiple areas but you need to have a clear aim in mind and set out to find folks that fit that aim.

So, let me present you with some suggestions:

  • Use trending topics and click through to profiles that interest you.
  • Ensure you fill out your Twitter Bio and have a link to your blog / company / website
  • Twellow – Billed as the Twitter Yellow Pages helps you find Twitter users by occupation.
  • Just Tweet It – Appears to be linked to Twellow but its directory is more category based.
  • Twubble – This one requires that you already have some followers but it digs out your followers followers.
  • TwitDir – Search by keyword in a users name, description and tweets.
  • And here’s a google search to finish with for “Twitter Directories” …

Of course one guaranteed way to get followers is to be known for something. Be it as an author, actor, expert, etc. One thing I have found is that if I follow someone, then unless they are ultra famous they will follow me back.

Enjoy.

"Don't find us, we'll find you."

One thing about Twitter, the one thing I dislike, is that plenty of people will follow you as you become more and more active on there.

Whilst that seems to be the spirit of the system it is unfortunate that about 95% of those (in my case) are spammers just looking to promote a website, affiliate links or even entice you into visiting malware-infested pages.

So, if you are keen to get more followers then the advice above is sound, but pay attention to who you are following back.

Good advice Lee and thanks for pointing that out – sometimes I forget the opposing part of a story.

Its a topic that bugs the life out of me – I typically get followed by a couple of hundred people a day who then unfollow 24 hours later.

I receive email notifications of new follows in case there are genuine people in there but there is just so much noise… its a real time killer!
