465378_21660981An amazing thing happened last week.

I managed to fit in a date with my wife! Between my shift work and our committments to our family and other roles we don’t often get out and about. However, #1 son is home having finished his first year in Uni so we now have an automatic built in baby sitter again. So what did we do?

We stocked up on sweeties and headed off to see Star Trek as we are both fans. That wasn’t always the case and early on in our marriage my wife made a concious decision to ‘get into’  some of the stuff I like so now we have a common love of Star Trek, Andromeda, Firefly and so on and so on …. and despite having heard mixed reviews we thoroughly loved it.

I won’t be posting any spoilers but I will throw out a warning – don’t go to see it expecting it to seamlessly follow or fit into what you currently know about any part of  the series. We didn’t and loved it.

It also set me to thinking that we (and here I expecially include myself) tend to approach our christian walk and our vision in much the same way. We go along knowing the story this far and believing that it will always be the same or at least be a variant of the same story in the years to come.

But why should it?

Why can’t we re-start?

Why can’t we throw our life a curve ball?

As you know I’m a small church tech guy doing my best to support the church staff, etc., so (and here’s a thought) why can’t we adapt what we do to surprise those we support? Instead of waiting for a problem to be thrown at us, why don’t we adapt and intercept the problem? OK – we can’t all predict hardware issues but what about the user who doesn’t use best practices with the PC or a software app? Or they always seem to struggle with a certain task?

Instead of waiting for the inevitable request for assistance why don’t we go out of our way to involve them. Why don’t we find out what their schedule is fit some training in for them around it? Invite them over for food and discuss any issues they have? In short, be creative and think outside the box – your box that is.

I don’t have all the answers but I am willing to try and change – what about you?

May you live long & prosper!
